It's Voting Time!

Ok everyone, we've got Very Important Business to attend to. I haven't had much to say for myself over the past few weeks, mainly because I've been sitting around dealing with the soul destroying task that is multiple job applications. Telling people over and over why I'm such a great match for their school, when in fact I often have no idea whether that's true or not, haha. And trying NOT to get my hopes up for anything in particular, since who knows where I'll end up, if anywhere.

In any case, despite all that, I'm also getting ready for the Big Day of knee surgery, but before that I have the minor little detail of becoming a doctor. Of philosophy, but whatever, it still entitles me to the Dr. prefix, even if I'll never use it! So now that the research is done and the diss is written, I need to focus on the hardest question of all: what to wear to the defense!

This is where you all come in. I have, for your consideration, three finalists, which I will present in what is, in my opinion, ascending order of formality. I have a preference among these three choices, but so as not to skew the voting (we are in a democracy, after all), I will keep my mouth shut. Well, actually, we probably won't be in a democracy, as I retain final say, haha. And gay guys' votes will count double, because you should always trust gay guys when it comes to fashion advice.

First up, we have a jumper with a purple shirt. You can't tell from the pic, but the shirt has French cuffs, which does indeed add a touch of class.

Next we have suit #1, with a green satiny shirt:

And finally, we have suit #2, the power suit to beat all power suits (yes, that's a vest you see). This suit has an illustrious history, as I bought it to give a speech to 1900 people in the UN General Assembly, at that main podium where Krushchev banged his shoe (yes, I did the same, but not during my speech) and where Chavez said he smelled the Devil after Bush spoke (that was a few years after my speech).

My assumption, should this outfit prevail, is that I'd wear it without the jacket for the actual defense:

It's hard to tell, but the suit is pinstriped with baby blue pinstripes, and the shirt I'm wearing is a matching baby blue color. I SWEAR I don't look like a caterer in real life!

Ok, so that's all for now. Let the voting begin. That means I want comments!!!

  1. Yay for double votes! It's like I'm a rich country at the World Bank!

I'm voting for the 3rd option, aka the nuclear option, but I'm allowing for a brightening of the corresponding shirt should you so desire.

  2. I'm voting for #2, although I should point out that I defended in shorts and a t-shirt, and with my wrist heavily taped for a softball game later in the day.

  4. Suit #2 but WITHOUT the jacket ! Definately.

  5. Wondering what the green satiny shirt would look like with the black suit? Though I can't see the pinstripes so well so maybe it will clash.

  6. I agree with the others... Suit #2. Very professor and doctorish! Course you could wear a bathrobe and still do great. :). A. Nancy

  7. well i'm kind of a skirts person but I think the suit#2 is better.
For the skirt suit, I would wear it with a different shirt, maybe a blouse you can tuck in? but maybe for a different occasion ;)

  8. I think I'm the only person who actually kind of likes option 1. I also like the last option, although all 3 are very nice. If there's already one that you personally feel the most comfortable in, I think you should pick that, because no matter what we think, if you feel super confident in one, that will probably affect your performance for the better.

  9. Darling, Kathryn: My pick would def. be option #1. It screams confidence, it's oozing with class and it also contains that touch of je ne sais quoi. French cuffs are always a nice touch (as I have quite a few French cuffed shirts). May I suggest the suits for your interviews. Know that I am always available for fashion consulting for free. However, that will change once you land a cushy assignment. Abientot!!!

    PS: Aren't u sorry you asked....LOL

  10. Hey Kathryn,
Since my vote counts double, I am going to give you a #1 and a #2 pick.
    #1 -Outfit 1
    #2 -Outfit 3
I have a soft spot for French cuff and I have seen you in Outfit 1 and it is very flattering on you.
Outfit 3 would be a great interview option. It give's that power of the "traveling pants" à la Hilary.
Which ever you pick, you will dfinitely knock them dead ...

  11. I vote for #3 without the jacket but you should probably give my vote half-weight given my well-known lack of style. As further evidence, I should point out that I'm pretty sure I defended in a pair of khaki pants and a brown crew neck sweater (gah!)

  12. I preface this with an acknowledgment of my lack of fashion sense, but with an appreciation of the fact that I wear a suit everyday --

I vote for suit #1, but with nude stockings and not black. (I also would like a chance to evaluate it with the shirt tucked in--I can't really tell from the picture if that is a good idea or even a possibility.)

  13. 3 or 4
(but if you take two, find other shoes to make your legs look longer. For me, your shirt and vest look too long with the skirt so either higher shoes or shorter vest and shirt)

    Bonne chance,
    Mel

  14. Hahaha, well Judy votes for suit #2. I suppose that if gay guys' votes count double, the diss advisor's vote has to count about 100 times. hehehe.

  15. After much deliberation, I am casting my vote for option 1. I think it's a distinctly Kathryn Kleppinger outfit and the perfect choice for a smashing diss defense!

  16. Since I took the pictures--I like the blue suit with the vest. I don't think I would wear the jacket to the defense. I also liked the jumper and lavender shirt. I think you should wear the outfit that you feel most comfortable in and then knock them out with the defense of the thesis! Just hope that your suit isn't covered in cat hair by the time you get there!!!!

  17. If the judy of which you speak is the Judy I think it is, "no fair"...LOL

  18. Peg makes a good point - which outfit will repel cat hair!!!

And I'm thinking that this vote is rigged! Judy gets 100 votes???
